June 9 // Arrival

Welcome to the capitol of Spain, Madrid! Founded in the late 1500s, today the city is bustling and the economic center of Southern Europe.

Here, life is different. Focus is placed around food and drinks and time with friends and family. Dinners here start around 8 p.m. (and even then you may get some weird looks if you dine that early!), vermouth, caña, claras and tinto de verano are the drinks of choice, and tapas are an added bonus when you have them.

The culture here is rich and history surrounds you everywhere you go. From the former royal park –  the spectacular Retiro, to the world’s oldest restaurant off Plaza Mayor, you’re greeted with reminders of the past of this city.

In the late afternoon we will meet to go on a walking tour of the city and then gather to have our first dinner together and feast on creative Spanish dishes like the foodies we are.

Meals included: dinner

June 11 // The Prado, tapas and more

The Museo de Prado is a can’t miss while visiting Madrid. More than 200 years old, the museum houses art from the 16th and 17th centuries. Rather than aiming at comprehensiveness, collectors aimed to assemble as many works as possible by their favourite artists. This explains why the Prado has been described as a museum of painters not of paintings, given that its artists are represented in a superlative manner with, for example, the largest holdings of Bosch, Titian, El Greco, Rubens, Velázquez and Goya, some numbering more than 100 works.

After we explore the vegan side of Prado with a local tour guide and learn about its history, we’ll head to another important neighborhood of Madrid, Lavapies for vegan tapas and experience this important part of Spanish culture. Later (and we mean later!), we’ll all get dinner together.
